Modern Family started in the fall of 2009. Despite its early success, perhaps not even the main cast could've predicted a run lasting over a decade, along with over 250 episodes aired.
However, as we're going to reveal in the following, there were some bumps along the way, and that included some troubling negotiations behind the scenes. We'll reveal the problems that took place behind the scenes, and if the younger actors were able to score a significant boost comparable to the older stars on the show. We'll also reveal which actor walked away with the most lucrative backend deal for the series.
Let's get started.

Sarah Hyland has no recollection of some Modern Family episodes, and the real reason is a bit of a tear-jacker.The Young Actors On Modern Family Also Got A Massive Boost Going From $20K To $100K
Contract disputes took place a couple of times behind the scenes during Modern Family, and they almost threatened the show's longevity. Thankfully, things worked out in the end, and at first, that held true for the older cast. They secured a massive pay of $500,000 per episode. That was a major upgrade of 40%.
According to Deadline, back in 2017, the young adult cast members also inked new deal with pay bumps. It wasn't as high compared to the old cast, but still a healthy raise. The young cast was making a pay of $20K at one point, and that was increased to $100K.
Deadline writes, "I hear the young actors scored significant pay increases that takes them over $100,000 an episode. The re-ups for Hyland, Winter, Gould and Rodriguez keep the entire original cast of Modern Family, whose contracts were up after Season 8."

Ed O'Neill Got An Extra Boost Thanks To Backend Profits
Back in 2012, believe it or not, Modern Family was on the verge of cancelation. Negotiations with the actors were very far apart. Thankfully, a deal was reached, and it seems like a particular actor walked away with the biggest backend deal out of all the cast. Given his popularity in the world of comedy series, it made sense that Ed O'Neil was given some extra incentives.
Today wrote, "The new deals will bring O'Neill's salary pretty much in line with his co-stars (he previously made a lot more), but he will receive significantly more in back-end participation, making his ultimate take from "Modern Family" larger."

Ariel Winter had a difficult period on Modern Family, and court documents suggest she was almost fired.Back in 2012, the cast was able to get a huge raise, but Today revealed that things almost took a wrong turn. "The "Modern Family" cast has resolved a major family feud. After a summer of heated salary negotiations that led to a lawsuit, the cancellation (and subsequent rescheduling) of a table read and a tense week of back-and-forth negotiations, the six adult actors on ABC's top-rated comedy have agreed in principle to new contracts with producer 20th Century Fox Television."
Had negotiations broken down, no doubt the comedy series would have been picked up by another network.
Ed O'Neill Joked That He Misses The Money The Most From His Time On Modern Family
With a net worth of $65 million, Ed O'Neil is doing just fine these days, and he'll continue to cash in thanks to backend money. However, during the SAG Awards, the actor joked about not getting pay from Modern Family.
The cast reunited on-stage, and it made for a tremendous moment.
O'Neill said at the award show, “I didn’t want to get emotional up here, but you know what I miss about it most of all? Money."
He still keeps in touch with the Modern Family cast these days. However, Sofia Vergara admitted O'Neal's texting game is very weak, as the actor tends to be late to the party during conversations.
"He doesn't really do it the right way," Vergara chuckled. "He'll answer us 26 weeks later, some joke or some question. We're all like, 'Huh?'"
Jokes aside, O'Neil turned out to be the exact opposite of what Sofia Vergara expected.
“I used to watch Ed O’Neill when I was in Colombia so it was like I couldn’t believe it, and I was married to Ed O’Neill who was like 20 years older than me, I’m like, Oh my God! I remember the first that they told me he was going to be, you know, my husband, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I am going to be stuck with the old guy in the set for hours and it’s going to be so boring’ and it was the complete opposite."
It all worked out in the end.
