Rapper Maino, who served one year at the correctional facility, sat down with CNN‘s Brooke Baldwin to discuss how unlikely it is a Shawshank Redemption-style prison break could actually happen.

“[Prison escape] is a fantasy, it’s something that seems like it’s out of the movies,” said Maino. “It’s something we don’t usually see, we don’t usually encounter stuff like that. Out of the seventy prisons in New York State, that’s one of the most secure…You’re never really alone to be able to move around to get free.”

Former Sing Sing correctional officer, Ted Conover, pointed out that prisoners have the least amount of freedom behind bars at night because they’re locked away in their cell. “According to policy, the officer is to check the cell every couple of hours, less to see if somebody’s escaped because it’s never happened in Clinton,” Conover said.

Matt was convicted of three counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery after he beat a man to death in December 1997. He was given 25 years behind bars. Sweat is serving a life sentence for killing Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Tarsia in 2002.
