Kate Winslet Captures Critic Attention In New HBO Limited Series 'Mare Of Easttown'
Anyone looking for a new show to binge watch should look no further than HBO Max and their new limited series, Mare of Easttown.
The story centers on a police detective named Mare, played by Kate Winslet, who became a big thing in a small town when she made a once-in-a-lifetime shot during a basketball game. The problem with becoming a big thing, however, is that most of the time people don't let you forget it. For Mare, that's true in every sense of the word.
Winslet brings to light the troubled life of a detective who wants to solve a crime that haunts her small town, with the added pressure of trying to live up to everyone's expectations creates a time bomb for both the detective and her case.
Created by Brad Inglesby of Our Friend and The Way Back fame, this limited series event will premiere on the streaming service on April 18th, 2021.
The series also stars Evan Peters and Guy Pearce, among others, and will bring to life the feel of small town America from a tale set in Pennsylvania.
For her part, according to Madison, Kate Winslet obsessed over her accent for Mare of Easttown, and didn't always have an easy time of it, at one point stating the almost Boston-esque sound sometimes made her want to "throw things." Regardless, it seems as if she nailed it, at least enough to go through with filming.
"I always hate that when you can hear someone doing a voice or doing an accent,” she says. “And that’s one of the things for me that is more important than anything – just making it disappear and blend in.”
The critical consensus from Rotten Tomatoes says that while Mare of Easttown's ambitions at times exceed its reach, its central mystery is supported by such strong sense of place and character it hardly matters.
Vulture was also optimistic about the limited series, stating that the seven episode saga is "more than it appears." In their review, they said:
"Anything that can trigger a sense of shock, transport you to another town, and make you cackle...is the kind of television that’s worth your time."
Mare of Easttown premieres on HBO on April 18 at 10:05 PM EST. You can also watch it anytime after that with a subscription to HBO Max - which can also easily be added to an existing Hulu subscription.
