Here's What We Know About Selena Gomez's New Murder Mystery Series

If you love murder mysteries with an A-list cast, then you better check out Only Murders In The Building. The new Hulu original show will star Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin.
Despite the show being about murder, it is considered a comedy series, but can we really expect anything else if it stars Short and Martin. As we all know, murder mysteries and crime documentaries are very popular right now and has found a lot of success in them, especially on Hulu.
Short and Martin have been life-long friends and recently starred in the Netflix special, An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Life and are currently on tour this Summer.
We are very intrigued to see how this comedy/murder mystery will play out. Here's what we know about Selena Gomez's upcoming murder mystery series.
9 The Plot
The teaser trailer was recently released, and fans suddenly got super excited the show. The plot is as follows, "Three strangers share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another. Soon, the endangered trio comes to realize a killer might be living among them as they race to decipher the mounting clues before it's too late." Sounds interesting.
8 When And Where To Watch It
Only Murders In The Building will start on August 31st on Hulu. According to Wikipedia, "Internationally, the series will premiere on the same day on Disney+ under the dedicated streaming hub Star, as an original series, and on Star+ in Latin America. On Disney+ and Star+, Only Murders in the Building episodes will debut on a weekly basis." The series will have 10 episodes in all. There is no word on if this will be a one-season series or if they plan for more.
7 The Creators/Crew
Steve Martin actually came up with the concept for the show and is credited as an executive producer, a creator and alongside John Hoffman and a main writer, with other writers credited for one episode here and there. Hoffman, Short, Gomez, Dan Fogleman (Tangled, Crazy, Stupid Love), Jess Rosenthal (This Is Us) and Jamie Babbit (The Stand In), who also directs the series. 20th Television is serving as the studio.
6 What Gomez Had To Say About The Role
In September 2020, Gomez told Variety, “I also think [the series is] going to bring a lot of joy to people. I was on a Zoom with Steve and Marty, and I’m like, ‘I’m not going to get any work done because they are just so quick in their back-and-forth.’” It seems like Gomez is excited to return to television and is excited to work with two legendary and hilarious actors. She is also starring in HBO Max's "Selena + Chef."
5 The Guest Stars
According to IMDb, there are many guests stars that will appear in the series including Aaron Dominguez, who will star in 9 episodes, Vanessa Aspillaga, who will be in 5 episodes, Ryan Broussard, who will be in four along with Michael Cyril Creighton and Jeena Yi. Nathan Lane and Sting are also set to appear, whom Martin tweeted about earlier this year. He also posted a photo of him and Jane Lynch on set to Twitter, but she is not credited anywhere.
4 Gomez Is Returning To TV
This will be the first time since Disney Channel's Wizards Of Waverly Place that Gomez is back on scripted television. Gomez has starred in films such as Monte Carlo, Spring Breakers, Princess Protection Program, Ramona and Beezus, Hotel Transylvania and more.
She has had a successful music career and beauty line and has recently started working behind-the-scenes as executive producer on many projects including 13 Reasons Why and Living Undocumented. It is so good to see her return to television.
3 Steve Martin Hand-Picked Her
Serving as creator and main writer has its perks. Since he revealed the project, Martin hoped to have Gomez on the project. "You get a list of names, you know, you're thinking, Sure, they'd be good, they'd be good, and then they say, 'What about Selena Gomez?' and it's just—yes, of course. There was no question except 'Can we get her?' We knew she would enhance the show in so many ways, the number one being talent," he told Vogue earlier this year. "Her performance is rich and adult. She's learned to underplay when necessary. Marty and I are pretty manic, and she's this solid, solid rock foundation. She's nicely, intensely low-key." Imagine being hand-picked by Steve Martin.
2 Gomez Will Have A Love Interest
Gomez, who plays Mabel, will have a love interest on the show. She shares a romance with Oscar, played by Aaron Dominguez. This was revealed and confirmed to the Los Angeles Times by Gomez, after paparazzi photos on set were misinterpreted by fans when the two were appearing affectionate.
She told the newspaper, ""We had just started working together," Gomez told the Times. "I honestly thought, 'No wonder guys don't want to date me!' I think people only care because I'm young, and the older I get the less they'll care. For now it's a part of the job that I don't really like. I'm actually grateful that I'm not involved with anyone right now."
1 Steve Martin Enjoys His Co-Stars... Well Kind Of
On the first day of shooting, Martin shared a behind the scenes photo with the caption, 'Today is the first day of filming our new TV show, 'Only Murders in the Building,' in Manhattan. Starring the incredible Selena Gomez and the just okay Martin Short."
That is a joke, of course, as Short and Martin are comedians and have worked together many times in the past. Be sure to check out the series if you love a little comedy mixed in with drama and murder.
